DECORATIVE CONCRETE COATINGS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We are a Waukesha based company and have served the Waukesha and surrounding counties for the past 9 years. We are members of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and hold an A excellent rating at the BBB.   All of us at Colorful Concrete Solutions strive to offer the best quality products and professional service at a competitive price.  We offer the finest UV stable indoor and outdoor coating materials with almost limitless color, texture, pattern and slip resistance selections.  These coatings can bond permanently to your concrete surface through a chemical and mechanical bonding process.

What are your coatings made of?

 1. Cementious mixes with acrylic modifiers which can be sprayed, troweled or stamped onto the existing concrete surface.

2. Polyaspartic Polyurea which is a two part mixture up to 4x’s stronger than epoxy with more abrasion and chemical resistance and      does not yellow, fade, or moisture blush like epoxies.Epoxy also hardens and shrinks for the life of the product and thus becomes      brittle and cracks.Polyaspartic changes in the first 7 days and then is static the rest of it’s life and is 98% more flexible than epoxy.

How do you prepare the surface?

Polyaspartics:  All coatings are only as good as the preparation of the surface.  We use vacuum grinders with some of the finest diamond grits to open the surface pores and create a scratch pattern.

Cementious:  Either the same grinding process or power washing with acid etching.

How long does installation take?

Polyaspartic floors can typically be installed in one day.  Cementious coatings typically take between 1-3 days. The amount of time is dependant on the amount of square footage and weather conditions.  (cold & humidity)

When can the floor be returned to service?

Polyaspartic floors can resume foot traffic in 1-4 hours and drive traffic in 24-48 hours. Cementious floors can be walked upon after 24 hours and driven on after 48 hours.  Cold and humidity can lengthen these times.

How long do the coatings last?

These coatings can last a lifetime with the right maintenance.  There are 40 year old floors still going strong.

All of our coatings are UV stable and do not yellow or fade.  With Cementious coatings the top two coats are high solid sealers which last up to 10 years.  Polyaspartic coatings typically last 15-20 years but can be roughed up and top coated to extend their life.

Are the coatings slippery?

The very nature of the application process as well as the texture of the added materials allow us the ability to make your decorative concrete surface as slip resistant as you desire.

How do the coatings hold up to WI winters?

There are 20+ year old coatings still going in Canada and Alaska.  These coatings mechanically and chemically become one with your concrete and naturally heave or contract with your concrete.  Cold and heat do not effect the surface.  These surfaces can be salted without damage to your decorative concrete.

You cannot plow these surfaces.  We recommend using plastic shovels and snow blowers fitted with hard composite angle brackets and scraper blades.

Can you repair pitting, pop outs, and cracks?

Here is the truth regarding these problems:  We use some of the strongest repair products available.  They can be applied and ready for grinding in 5-15 minutes.  They are stronger than epoxies and your concrete.  We guarantee that pitting and pop outs won’t return.  Cracking is a different issue.  No matter what you hear, who says it or what product is used, cracks can return.  Because our products are so strong, if your concrete goes through the same process that originally caused the crack, your concrete may crack next to our repair with no failure to our repair.  It has been our experience, over millions of square feet of resurfacing, that cracks on a good foundation (garages, basements, porches…) tend to not return but cracks on an unstable foundation (driveways) tend to return and usually quickly.  Stable cracks tend not to return but there is no guarantee that a crack will not return.

What maintenance is required?

All coatings should be cleaned at least one time per year and after chemical spills.  Protect the coatings from sharp metal edges.  If you use plastic edges the surfaces will look great for many years to come.  All coatings can be power washed and simple cleaners can be used like Simple Green, Dawn…

Exterior Cementious coatings should be resealed every 4-6 years for optimal performance, but our sealers can last up to 10 years.  Leaves should not be piled on the surface for long periods of time.  (tannic acid can darken coating)  Polyaspartic coatings can be roughed and top coated if they become dim from surface wear.  Do not use citrus cleaners which can dim their surface prematurely.

What is your warranty?

We offer a residential ten year warranty.  A copy can be obtained from your representative.

How do we differ from our competition?

Not all coatings are created equal.  Epoxies are cheaper than polyaspartic and some companies will use epoxy for the under coatings.  Some companies only apply 2 coats of product; We use a four coat system for our polyaspartic flooring, including two clear top coats for added protection and durability.  Our coatings are all UVstable and will not yellow or fade over time like epoxies.  The quality of polyaspartic is in the additives and solids.  Some companies use solids as low as 60%.  We use high solids from 72-90% depending on what is needed for each surface.  We offer a trustworthy, professional service and stand behind our products and workmanship.
